The South Carolina community is mourning the loss of former State Representative Chris Murphy, who passed away on Wednesday evening. He was found deceased at his home at approximately 7:12 p.m., according to the Dorchester County Coroner’s Office. The cause of death has not yet been determined.
Murphy dedicated more than a decade to serving the people of South Carolina in the House of Representatives, representing District 98 in Dorchester County from 2011 until his retirement, which became effective on January 5, 2026. Before joining the State House, he served on the Dorchester County Council from 2002 to 2010 and was elected chairman in 2005.
His career in public service was marked by a commitment to his community, leadership during a period of significant growth in Dorchester County, and a legal career devoted to protecting and serving others. Murphy also played an important role outside of elected office as a founding member of the Summerville Miracle League, helping create opportunities for local families.

U.S. Representative Nancy Mace, who served alongside Murphy in the South Carolina House, described him as a friend and former colleague whose legacy positively impacted people across the state. Murphy’s passing leaves a significant void in South Carolina’s public service community. He is remembered for his dedication, integrity, and unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others.
He is survived by his wife, Judge Maite Murphy, their children, Austin and Jackson, and many family members, friends, and colleagues who will continue to honor his legacy.
